Rosie’s Fare is an alternative speculation to the typical Black American kitchen. Inspired by the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Black chefs that serviced kitchens throughout America’s history, this installation will provide new imaginaries that commemorate the immense toll that the kitchen took on Black families. In a moment of cross-cultural and intergenerational collaboration, Germane Barnes pairs the immersive kitchen installation with audio interviews from Caribbean diasporic families living in Miami, speaking to notions of legacy, migration, and ritual. Through the reimagined and celebratory tribute to his grandmother Rosie, Barnes transforms a commercial storefront into an intimate memorialization of domestic space.
